The staff of XboxEdge.com voted and debated on each game on this list. Feel free to disagree and tell us what your picks for each category is in the comments below.
Best New IP: Bastion
Bastion debuted during Xbox Live Arcade’s 2011 Summer of Arcade and it quickly became one of the most critically acclaimed games of the year. The simplistic combat and surprising deep levels of customization and RPG elements made this game stand out against other downloadable and even retail games. The innovative way that the story was narrated created a unique and insightful gaming experience.
Runner up: Bullet Storm
Best RPG: Skyrim
Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim from Bethesda is one of the largest open world games released to date. Filled with hundreds of hours of quests, hundreds of characters, thousands of items and countless unique dungeons, Skyrim easily takes the crown as best RPG.
Runner up: Deux Ex: Human Revolution
Best Shooter: Gears of War 3
Up against some heavy competition in the best shooter category, Gears of War 3 stands above other mega franchises like Call of Duty and Battlefield. The conclusion to Marcus Fenix’s story was a thrilling rollercoaster punctuated by some emotional story beats. Multiplayer was much improved from Gears of War 2 and wasn’t cookie cutter like other shooters. The upgrades to Horde mode made it one of the most addictive things about the game and created a great cooperative experience.
Runner up: Bullet Storm
Best Co-op: Portal 2
Portal 2 is unlike any other game released this year. While other games have cooperative modes, Portal 2 features a story just for cooperative play. The characters in Portal 2 are fantastic and often hilarious. Portal 2 challenges players mentally and tests communication skills. Portal 2 is hands down the best cooperative experience released this year.
Runner up: Gears of War 3
Best Action Game: Batman: Arkham City
No one does action quite like Batman. Rocksteady proved this concept once again in Batman: Arkham City. Being able to traverse around Arkham City as the dark knight and fight against dozens of Batman’s rogues gallery was quite the experience. Stepping into the batsuit and using a wide array of gadgets to take down enemies made us feel like we were actually Batman. Not only is it the best comic book game ever made, it was the best action game of 2011!
Runner up: L.A. Noire
Best Fighting Game: Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3
While the release of Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 may be controversial to some it added much needed improvements to the original Marvel vs. Capcom 3 (which was also released this year). It has inspired hundreds if not thousands of gamers to get into the competitive fighting scene and has been a mainstay at fighting game tournaments across the world. The high speed game is great for button mashers but has an incredible level of depth, unparalleled in any other fighting game released this year.
The more you get into Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 the more it is revealed as a complex strategy game that hinges on timing and execution.
Runner up: Mortal Kombat
Game of the Year: Skyrim
2011 was a great year for video games. Countless games have been released that have captured our attention and were also very good. No other game released in2011 has sucked in so many people as Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. While games like Modern Warfare 3 may have a larger users base, Skyrim has ensnared millions to the point of obsession. Skyrim can be played for over one hundred hours and players will feel like they have barely scratched the surface of what the game has to offer.
Bethesda has created one of the most rich and immersive worlds to date with very strong narratives both in the main quest and side quests. Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is XboxEdge.com’s Game of the Year.
Runner up: Portal 2
